“I inherited it from my father,” she said. “He used to haul his drag car to the strip with this truck. It has a 428-cubic-inch Cobra Jet engine in it.”

I was sold! This old truck featured a bizarre engine swap and family history to boot!

“I was born and raised in this area,” she said. “My father bought this truck new in 1965. We called it Ethyl. It had a camper on the back, and he towed a utility trailer with all his tools and the race car. The local Ford dealership was the sponsor on my father’s race cars.”

She told me that her father raced a variety of cars—all Fords—including a Boss 429 and a Pinto. “He set track records with that Boss 429 all over the United States,” she said. His truck didn’t come with the 428 engine, but when he blew up the original engine, the dealer installed the bigger engine.

She said the truck was sitting outside at her house. It’s red with a white top and has a four-speed manual transmission.

I asked her if her father ever drag raced that truck. “No, he didn’t, but I did,” she said. “That’s how I lost my driver’s license when I was sixteen years old.”

I asked if she would consider restoring the truck, but because oil prices were so low, she said it’s on the backburner. Kathy’s husband, Larry, and son, Cody, work in the oil industry, and with prices so low, there just wasn’t any extra money for old-truck restorations in the near future. “We probably won’t repaint it, but clearcoat it,” she said. “That way we’ll preserve some of the history of the truck. We would just restore it mechanically and redo the interior.”
